Protesting mineral rights is a little bit more tricky than the average property protest.

I've done enough research to be able to point you in the right direction and give you a couple of ideas on the angle you can take if you want to protest. I'll have to be honest with you, I've never done it before. I've got a mineral account and I think I might pay $7 in tax a year. I'm not protesting that.

If you’re determined to protest, the first tip I have for you is to wait until the last day to file your protest. This would ensure that you're getting your protest in after the majority of other mineral account owners have already resolved their protests.

Then go to the appraisal district and ask the person behind the counter for any data from resolved accounts in the system that could be helpful for your protest. You can use that as your own evidence.

Keep in mind that the reason why these protests are so difficult is because the data is proprietary. The only people who are going to know the type of the data that you're going to need in order to wage an effective protest are the big production companies.

A lot of times they're not going to release that kind of data. However, the big oil and gas companies are going to protest massive numbers of mineral accounts. Most of the time, they're going to resolve them informally with the appraisal district. I suggest this is the same approach you use.
